CyberCare is a community project initiated by a group of young people in Malaysia to use information technology to connect youth in orphanages to help them bridge the digital divide. The projects that CyberCare have undertaken are recognised as part of an innovative social programme to transform the care of youth in orphanages from social welfare handouts to hands-on community care. Since 1999, CyberCare has rallied the support of more than 800 volunteers with an average age 22-30 to journey with the youth in joint activities to develop personal qualities and leadership. At the heart of their social programme is the setting up of technology infrastructure comprising of computer equipment and internet access to connect these youth into an electronic community. To date CyberCare has linked 90 Homes/Orphanages, connecting over 5000 youth. With this infrastructure in place CyberCare has implemented eWorkshops and CyberCamps to promote the use of IT amongst the youth to improve the quality of their lives. In 2004 CyberCare started piloting the Youth Leadership Mentoring Programme. We believe that CyberCare can truly bridge between the youth’s hope and actually living their dreams.
Managed by the LIONS Club of CyberCare Kuala Lumpur, the CyberCare programme has connected 90 homes* throughout Malaysia with over 5,000 children, to date. Since its inception, CyberCare has enrolled the support from Microsoft, Samsung, National IT Council Malaysia (NITC), Swiss Development Corporation (SDC), Global Knowledge Partnership (GKP), Demonstrator Application Grant Scheme (DAGS), Symantec and Hewlett Packard among its sponsors. We also collaborate with other NGOs such as Yellow House by the Friends of Unicef, Monfort Foundation, Persatuan Kebajikan Kanda-Dinda, Selangor Social Welfare Council among others, so that we can align our efforts and serve the youth more effectively and efficiently. |
